Located in a Cincinnati, Ohio suburban site of about ten acres, the company's roots go back over one hundred years.
The year 2007 marked the company's 100 year anniversary.
The company began manufacturing DC power supplies in the early thirties for the independant telephone companies.
A variety of DC power supplies were made as utilities phased out the distribution of DC service. Our supplies powered
Western Union lines, the ITT international long lines, the tote board of the New York Stock exchange.
Early battery chargers used a glass envelope tube for rectification. Always searching for a better rectifier,
in 1947 the company had the original patent on a battery charger using selenium rectifiers. The
company made copper oxide rectifiers and as technology progressed, manufactured rectifiers
and other devices of silicon and germanium.
Over the years the company has continued to bring new ideas and improvements
to the battery charger market. Japlar was the first to introduce improvements in
rectifiers, switches, and metering that are still in use today. Japlar was the first to
develop automatic chargers and made the first practical high frequency switching
charger for lead acid batteries in the eighties.
In recent years our chargers and power supplies have found their way to the ends
of the earth: a few arc seconds from the north pole in a research station where they
survive 85 below temperatures; scattered around the middle of California in remote
telemetry units for water supply control; on UN peace keeping missions for
communications purposes in harsh climates of Africa and Asia; at railroad crossings
powering crossing gates; in subways powering logic control room equipment; we
send our USA made chargers to Japan for Japanese bass fishermen.
Our product lines include starting and lighting service chargers for typical automotive
applications; a variety of cyclic and float service chargers for 12 to 48 volt lead acid battery
types; high frequency switching chargers with universal AC input 12 to 48 volt service; custom
designed and manufactured multi-voltage adjustable heavy duty chargers; heavy duty chargers
for back-up generators; special purpose ferroresonant chargers, up to 147 VDC; battery
voltage monitoring alarm systems of 12 and 24 volt applications.
