Installation Overview:
This document provides the information needed to install a High Voltage Interface (HVI)
Back Board at a High Voltage Interface location. The design presented and the
installation steps are provided to protect personnel and equipment from this harsh
environment. Any deviation from this design or installation event sequence may put
personnel at serious risk of injury or death and/or equipment at serious risk of damage.
This interface is a grouping of protective equipment at a site where High Voltage may be
impressed on a telephone type circuit. This might equate to a power substation or a 911
communication center.
The HVI should be located on the grid of the site. This installation location should also
be located so as to provide easy access for maintenance. This document should be
read in its entirety and the associated drawings studied so that you are familiar with the
work to be performed prior to actually starting work. This step will make the project
much easier and more error free.
The equipment utilized in this manual is designed to isolate energies, that is, it does not
shunt or route damaging energy to a grounding field. This is because the grounding
field itself is the source of the problems in most cases. Therefore, keep in mind the
object is to isolate differing potentials from each other.
That means keep the C.O. side of the cable pairs separate from the Station side cable
pairs at a distance of at least 4 1/2.
Sections 3 through 8 are an overview of the High Voltage Interface. Section 9 and on
are detailed instructions for installation of equipment and wiring of the cables and
equipment that make up the HVI.
