SERIES: Titus (Living with Integrity in a Hostile Culture)

MONDAY (12/26/05)

OPEN
Are you a man that flies off the handle, one who will not be contested, one
who is going to have his way no matter what, and if you dont get your way
youre going to fight for it? Youre going to get what you want. O Beloved,
do you ever need this program! You need to know what God says about the
model man and well look at it today on Gods Precepts for Life.

PART ONE
Kay: Beloved, did you listen to the opening of that program? Did one of
those things describe men that you know today? I know that some of you are
shaking your head and youre saying, Yes, thats my husband. Others are
saying, Yes, thats my son. And some of you are saying, Yeah, thats
some of the men that run our church. Well what were looking at in Titus is
the job description, at the profile of a man who was going to be an elder over
the church, a man that is going to help govern that church, a man that is
going to oversee the work of God through a particular group of believers.
And Paul is very, very concerned that when Titus appoints elders in every
city on that isle of Crete, that those elders meet all the qualifications. Now
twice in Titus, chapter 1, in verse 6 and in verse 7 he says that this elder, this

overseer must be above reproach as Gods steward. But now he wants us
to see okay, what does that look like if Im living above reproach? Well we
saw in verse 6, as David and I studied with you, that that man is to be the
husband of one wife. Hes to be a one-woman man. Hes to have children
who believe, children who are not accused of dissipation or rebellion of this
uncontrolled living. We saw in verse 7 that the overseer must be above
reproach as Gods steward. Now a steward is one that is accountable for
running a household. And what is the church? The church is the household
of God. Its made up of believers. He goes on and he spells it out so that we
dont miss it. That this overseer must not be self-willed. He must not be
quick tempered. He must not be addicted to wine and not pugnacious and
not fond of sordid gain. But he must be hospitable, loving what is good,
loving what is good, sensible, just, devout, self-controlled, holding fast the
faithful word, which is in accordance with the teaching that he, this overseer,
this elder, this model man, may be able both to exhort in sound doctrine and
to refute those who contradict. Now hes to be above reproach because as
he stands there and expounds the Word of God, the teaching of the Word of
God, as he refutes those who contradict, nobody is supposed to be able to
point a finger at him and say, Hey, listen, Im not going to listen to you.
You are a self-willed man. You are so hot under the collar. Nobody can talk
to you. And besides that, you are getting drunk. You are staying too long at
that wine table and when you do, Im telling you, youre ready to fight.
Youre always ready for a quarrel. And what do you want? You want sordid
gain just like the Cretans that live on this island. Well, as we look at that, I
want to go back to our model man, sitting beside me and who is David
Lawson and on our staff, part of our leadership team, travels, not only in the
United States but in different parts of the world teaching others how to study
the Word of God, teaching a lot of men how to study the Word of God, and
with his wife, raising up the next generation of men and women who are
strong in the Word of God, cause youre in charge of our student ministry.
David: We are working hard at impacting the next generation in the name of
Jesus Christ. They are so curious about the Word, but it has to be presented
well and it has to be a model man or a model woman doing it. They will not

tolerate a façade. And they will not tolerate someone who is selfish. This
word self-willed in verse 7, carries that idea that that they are totally
focused on themselves. Its even an arrogant selfishness. This is the guy that
when hes asked a question, he may not say it out loud, but what hes
thinking in his heart is leave me alone and why are you talking to me?
Kay: Why are you questioning me?
David: Why are you questioning me, but why are you even talking to me. I
would rather be left alone, thank you. Ive talked to guys who feel that way
sometimes when they get home from work and their wife has been with the
children and she wants to talk, and hes thinking you know, I talked all day,
cant you just leave me alone. Not that those guys are not the model man,
but thats that attitude. Now, Im using that as an illustration cause most of
the men listening will go, yeah, I know that feeling. Thats the attitude of
self-willed. I dont want to be bothered. But the man of God steps past that
and says it doesnt matter. I have to love my wife as Christ loved the church.
That means Im going to meet her need and were going to have a
conversation.
Kay: Un huh, and Im going to love others.
David: Im going to love others.
Kay: As Jesus loved them.
David: As Jesus loved them. And I am going to, in a leadership position, or
even just as a man in the church, Im going to communicate. Im going to
talk. Im going to be involved in other peoples lives, even though maybe
sometimes I really dont want to.
Kay: You know as David is talking, one of the things that happens in our
lives is when we get into the Word of God, God cleanses us with it. I mean
He shows us what truth is. Its like a plumb line that He drops and we can
measure the way that were living, the way that were thinking, the way that
were reacting and thats why we want you to download the study materials
on this course on Titus. Were just at the beginning of this course. You can
download it by going to preceptsforlife.com. These are the precepts for life

and it says, through Thy precepts I get understanding and I hate every false
way. So David, we understand now that Im not to be self-willed. It goes on
and says, not quick tempered.
David: Yeah.
Kay: Talk about it.
David: Its, its
Kay: Its different than not pugnacious.
David: No pugnacious is the fighter, its the same word that the men will be
familiar with, pugilist, a boxer, comes from the same root. Pugnacious is a
fighter. Hes looking for a fight. But this means hes quick to be angry. Its a
custom. Its a habit in his life. Angers a habit. And weve all known guys
like that. That were just angry and either short tempered or sometimes weve
known guys that were angry all the time. But the idea is it was a part of their
life. It has no place in the kingdom, love and tenderness and mercy, but not
just exploding in anger. Now Jesus was angry with unrighteousness, and He
was angry with people being injured, but Paul said be angry and dont let
the anger control you. Dont explode; dont sin.
Kay: Yeah, you know in Galatians, chapter 5 it talks about being filled with
the Spirit and what that looks like. And in Galatians, chapter 5 it says in
verse 19: Now the deeds of the flesh are evident, which are immorality,
impurity, sensuality, idolatry, sorceries, enmities, strife, jealousy, outbursts
of anger, disputes, dissentions, factions, envying, drunkenness, carousing,
things like these of which I forewarn you, just as I have forewarned you that
those who practice as a habit of life such things shall not inherit the kingdom
of God. But the fruit of the Spirit, when the Spirits controlling your life is
love, joy, peace, patience, so thats the opposite of this quick tempered
person.
David: Its the opposite of that anger and that quick temper. And the temper
usually comes, I think, because theyre self-willed and someones violating,
you know
Kay: Un huh, theyve stepped over their boundaries.
