Some later cars use the L circuit in the regulator as an interlock to prevent starter actuation while the motor is running.
Below is that type wiring diagram. If you have this type wiring you will have to do a few more things. There are a few ways
around this.
1.

You can connect the L wire of the old regulator to ground and run a new wire from the charge warning lamp to D+ on
the new alternator.
2.

Or you can ground the wire from the ignition switch somewhere under the dash.
3.

You could get fancy and install a relay that would allow you keep the starter interlock feature, but so many cars never
had this feature and they were not a problem.
