Discussion
CRDG Publication Services (Don Young, Helen Au)
Don Young introduced Helen Au, marketing manager for CRDG. Helen brings a
business perspective in helping CRDG to rethink how it is doing things, primarily its
publications. Helen is also taking on a new COE college-wide role by consolidating
and coordinating public information activities for the college. Her office is located at
CRDG in the Castle Memorial Annex.

Helen presented a portfolio of the work that MAPS can do for the college, such as
stationary, business cards, brochures, posters, etc. MAPS desires to serve as a one-
stop center for the college. They can provide consultation services, production, and
finishing services. MAPs offers competitive prices and has a special price list for the
COE at a very special price not available to the public. In addition to new CRDG
personnel and services at MAPs, there is also new equipment available that produces
higher quality products. Helen briefly reviewed her new college-wide responsibilities
in project management.

COE pins were distributed and all were encouraged to take pins to give to alumni,
especially with graduation right around the corner.

CDS Publications and Web Sites (Tom Conway)
Tom informed that that CDS Media Center offers web services in addition to printing
and publications. They will review/evaluate web designs and create matching
brochures. Web pages, brochures, booklets and interactive cds are presented as a
package. Web pages can be evaluated. A strength offered is the universal web
design that makes the sites more accessible independent of the output device, thereby
increasing your audience and providing easy access and maneuverability through the
site. It also meets legal requirements and standards related to the Rehabilitation Act
Amendments. The Media Center produces animation, print services such as letter COE Council Meeting Agenda, December 2, 2004

discussion boards, applications, and document archives.

UHM COE Annual Productivity DATA Report (Helen Au, Mona Chock)
Presentation on concept for COE Annual View Book
Last spring the college was ranked in US News & World Report, making the college
more visible to the public. The increased visibility provided a venue for trengthening
our relationship with the community. This relationship can generate more college
support for the COE mission and goals. Mona Chock presented a power point on the
concept for a COE Annual Report using the Annual Productivity Data in a user-
friendly way. There was a desire to humanize the college with the faces and voices of
the college and to balance COEs high tech with the high touch of the people of COE
faculty and staff. Council members were asked to contact Mona if they have any
suggestions for the report.

College Awards (Mark Fukeda)
Mark distributed a handout that listed past COE Awards recipients and potential
nominees for 2005. The theme for the 2005 UMH COE Recognition Dinner will be
Education and Democracy.

Teacher Cadet Program (Mel Spencer)
Mel Spencer has been attending meetings of the Hawai`i Alliance for Future
Teachers, Teacher Cadet Program on behalf of COE. This program was developed
to address the teacher shortage by recruiting well-qualified high school students and
providing them with support and academic direction to become community college
and/or university students majoring in education. HAFT wants to build alliances with
organizations involved with education like the UHM COE, to provide economic and
academic incentives for these students.

Michael announced a meeting for folio writers that will help to identify data needed
for NCATE. He reviewed upcoming deadlines. He informed that information is
being collected via surveys sent to principals, mentor teachers, and alumni.

Contracts and Grants, Departmental Data (Paul Kingery)
Paul referred to a handout provided to department heads. The COE has collected
about $700,000 so far from external overhead money, an increase from previous years
for the college. The handout provided a 5-year summary from 1999-2003. It lists
individuals who brought in specific indirect monies. The COE indirect rate is less
than for other colleges because much of the research done in COE is in training. The
indirect rate for training is funded at a lower level.
