ELECTRIC SERVICE HANDBOOK / TEMPORARY SERVICES
CHAPTER 1
Chapter 1
Introduction
This handbook is your guide to Puget Sound Energys (PSE) requirements for temporary
electric service.
What this handbook contains
In this handbook you will find answers to questions such as:
H
Where and how do I install the meter socket?
H
How tall does my service mast have to be?
H
What are the size requirements for the meter socket?
H
What do I have to do to get an underground service?
H
How do I locate existing underground utilities before I dig?
PSEs service territory map
For your reference, the Territory Map in the Appendix provides general boundaries for
PSEs electric service. A Customer Construction Services (CCS) Representative can
help you to determine the closest available service line and can provide you with cost
information for establishing new service.
Glossary of terms used in this handbook
For your convenience, glossary words appear in bold italics throughout the text the first
time they appear (e.g., meter socket).
Codes, permits, and inspections
This handbook should only be used as a guide. It does not cover all possible federal,
state, or local code requirements. It is your responsibility to ensure your project complies
with the most recent issue of the NEC and any other federal, state, or local codes that
may apply.
This handbook shall not be interpreted to conflict with the regulations of the State of
Washington or other regulatory bodies having jurisdiction. PSEs metering requirements
may be more stringent. Local codes and requirements related to the planned work should
be addressed before any construction begins.

Permits
You must obtain an electrical work permit before installing any service equipment, such
as service post, pedestal, or pole and meter base.
Electrical service equipment inspection
Once your service equipment is installed, the State of Washington, or the city with
jurisdiction over your area, requires that your installation pass an electrical inspection
before PSE can energize your system. It is your responsibility to request this inspection.
Electrical inspections for most areas in the PSE service territory are done by the State of
Washington Department of Labor and Industries. Electrical inspections are performed by
city personnel in the following cities:
Bellevue
Lacey
Renton
Bellingham
Mercer Island
SeaTac
Des Moines
Olympia
Federal Way
Redmond
The phone numbers for all of these offices can be found in the blue Government pages of
your local phone book.
