The world is changing at a very rapid paceand so is the energy industry. The creation
of new technology and a growing population is increasing the demand for energy and
forcing our society to look at the development and use of new energy sources. As
teachers, your challenge is educating our children about these issues as well as the latest
technological advances, the importance of protecting our natural resources, and electric
and gas safety.
At DTE Energy, we recognize your need for accurate and accessible information to help
you prepare lesson plans on energy. The Education and Community Relations Department
of DTE Energy is committed to serving as your energy resource. We offer a variety of
informative and helpful materials and presentations to assist you in the classroom.
We hope you will request and use the resources listed in this guide as a way of
helping students understand more about the energy universe around them.
If you would like additional assistance, please call us.
We are here to help!

For almost two decades, children across North America have
associated Louie the Lightning Bug
®
with electrical safety. Louie
was created in 1983 by two major electrical utilities for an inno-
vative childrens electrical safety campaign. He is currently the
electrical safety mascot of more than 80 electric companies,
including DTE Energy. DTE Energy sponsors Louies appearances
at choice events throughout its service area to remind everyone
to play it safe around electricity.

Louie the Lightning Bug
®
is prominent in DTE Energys Summer
Safety Town program which evolved from a need to teach
children about electrical safety. Its goal is to encourage a
positive understanding about electricity and energy issues
among tomorrows consumers. The program is about 45 minutes
long. During that time, a presenter and Louie explain how
electricity is made and share nine rules for electrical safety.
This is done through a story read from a teachers big book,
an animated video and the live antics of Louie! This free
educational program is offered from June through August in
conjunction with Michigan Public Schools Summer Safety
Towns. The program content is aimed at grades preschool
through second grade. To schedule, contact the program
coordinator at 313.235.7012.

Now you see it, now you dont. These are fine words for a
magic trick but hardly what we like to hear about our worlds
natural resources. To help students understand the challenges
facing our environment, DTE Energy presents Enviro-Magic!
This 30-minute show stars a professional magician. The focus
of this hocus-pocus is on how we can help preserve our
precious resources. This free educational program is available
for school assemblies (grades 2 through 6). It is also
appropriate for community activities (fairs, celebrations, etc.)
with large youth audiences.
To receive a program brochure and scheduling information for
your school or community event, call the DTE Energy
coordinator at 313.235.7187. Dates are limited. Allow 68
weeks to schedule.

DTE Energy in conjunction with the Metropolitan Detroit
Science Fair recognizes the outstanding talents of local
middle and high school students who submit Science Fair
entries related to energy and the environment. Students are
honored at an annual dinner where they are presented with
trophies for the best projects at the high school and middle
school levels. Teachers and parents are also recognized for their
support and encouragement. For more information, contact the
program coordinator at 313.235.9078.

DTE Energy, in conjunction with the Detroit Area Boy Scouts,
provides a twice monthly workshop for students of local high
schools to learn about careers in either business, engineering
or computer science. Staff volunteers instruct students in a
classroom setting on the basic aspects of their career interest.
Students learn about subjects such as marketing, accounting
and the Internet, or are able to do hands-on applications in
computer repair or electrical circuitry. Classes are held at
DTE Energy corporate headquarters. For more information,
contact the program coordinator at 313.235.9078.

sharing personal experiences as well as practical information
about how students can use their math and science education
for future careers. For more information, contact the program

RANTS
(P, L)
Sponsored by the DTE Energy Foundation, the mini-grants sup-
port energy-related projects that help students maintain their
curiosity and excitement about math, science, energy and the
environment. The grant offers resources for those hands-on,
energy-related projects that school budgets typically cannot
afford to fund. Grants are $50-$250, but proposals could be fund-
ed for more. All K-12 teachers employed in participating school
districts may apply. Grants are open to public, private and
parochial schools in our combined DTE Energy (Detroit Edison
and MichCon) service area. For more information on
programs in southeastern, northern and western Michigan
contact the program coordinator at 313.235.7012.
