CLASSIFICATION: Facility and Event Electrician
DEPARTMENT:
Convention/Sports/Entertainment Department and
Public Works - Operations
CLASS DEFINITION: To construct, install, maintain and repair electrical systems and equipment
in city facilities.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED:
When assigned to Public Works Operations, works under technical supervision of a Public Works
Field Supervisor.
When assigned to the Convention/Sports/Entertainment Department, works under technical
supervision of a Facility Services Manager.
EXAMPLES OF ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: Depending upon area of assignment,
responsibilities and duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:
Install and replace electrical circuits, switches, panels, conduit, wiring, fixtures, clocks, commercial
meter services, kitchen equipment, emergency generator equipment and electrical overhead
doors.
Maintain, analyze, modify, and repair digital control and recording systems related but not limited to
audiovisual, HVAC, lighting, and security.
Maintain, analyze, modify, and repair variable frequency drives and related controls.
Set up and monitor sound and recording systems.
Program and repair electronic signs and scoreboards.
Repair, drive motors, gear head motors and the electrical parts of air conditioning controls; repair
power tools.
Maintain, analyze, modify and repair photovoltaic systems.
Perform preventive electrical maintenance on all types of electrical equipment, including pumps,
compressors, kitchen equipment, and lighting equipment.
Operate and inspect overhead cranes and other electrical equipment.
Operate and make regular inspections of transformers, circuit breakers, automatic motor control
circuits, disconnects, machine shop equipment, overhead cranes, exhaust and intake fans.
Work from millivolts to 600 volts.

Design and make drawings of dimmer systems, lighting systems, and radio control systems.
Design, fabricate, install and document EMS, RF sound, CCTV and MATV systems.
Perform related duties and responsibilities as required.
JOB RELATED QUALIFICATIONS:
Experience and Training Guidelines: Any combination of experience and training that would
likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the
knowledge and abilities are as follows:
Experience: Journey level skill as an electrician.
Knowledge of: Principles of electrical construction, maintenance, and repair; sound systems;
electronic signs; and applicable safety requirements.
Ability to: Safely perform electrical and electronic construction, maintenance and repair; install and
maintain electrical circuits up to and including 600 volts; set up and monitor sound and recording
systems; program and repair electronic signs and scoreboards; read and interpret manuals,
electrical schematics and blueprints; perform mathematical calculations and apply reasoning; use
proper safety techniques; operate basic personal computer programs to include Computerized
Maintenance Management System (CMMS) and Outreach; establish and maintain effective
working relationships with those contacted in the course of work
License/Certification Required: Possession of a valid Class C California Drivers License by
date of appointment. Ability to obtain California Electrical Certification by 2005 as stated in
California Assembly Bill AB931.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
Environmental Conditions: Exposure to smoke, fumes, gas, dirt, dust, grease, oil, chemicals,
solvents and toxic agents. Work with live electricity; work in inclement weather.
Physical Conditions: Due to the nature of work assignments, incumbents must be able to use
both hands, arms and legs; stoop and bend; lift up to and carry 100 pounds; maintain proper
balance, stand and walk; climb stairs, ladders and scaffolding at heights up to 300 feet; work in
confined spaces; use applicable safety requirements. Ability to speak clearly; hear sufficient to
detect noises related to mechanical problems; corrected vision to ensure depth perception, color
vision and near and distance sight.

minimum qualifications for Lead Facility and Event Electrician Convention Center or Public
Works Field Supervisor.
