Thank you for purchasing the Digital Director PRO. We are sure you will be very pleased with it.
Setup and Quick Start
The front panel is quite simple with few user controls. Plug in digital inputs and output and set the switching mode.
Power
The DD-PRO comes with a desktop power supply. It is either 120V or 240V and is not switchable. The DD-PRO operates with the
MSB P1000 heavy duty power supply. A switch on the back allows it to be switched between 240V and 120V. Please check your setting
before plugging the unit in. Leave the DD-PRO powered on all the time.
Front Panel Controls
Input Up and Down These buttons automatically switch the unit into the manual select mode, incrementing the input either up or down
one.
Mode This button places toggles through the various switching modes.
Reclocking This button toggles the optional reclocking feature on and off. The Red LED lights when the feature is on. Reclocking
completely replaces the incoming clock with a stable extremely low jitter clock. It also adds a digital time delay to the output.
LED Display A long row of LEDs indicates the Mode and Input status. The left 6 LEDs are the 6 switch modes and the right 16 are
the 16 inputs. The highest priority input is on the far right. The LEDs line up with the connectors on the back panel. Any active input
shows the LED at half brightness. The currently selected input is shown at full brightness.
Rear Panel Details
16 Digital Inputs These SP/DIF inputs can be ordered with either RCA or BNC connectors, or any mix. Toslink inputs require an ad-
ditional charge.
1 Digital Outputs This SP/DIF output can be ordered with either RCA or BNC connector. It is transformer coupled and has an output
level of 650 mV pp.
MSB Network This CAT5 connector is not currently supported.
DB-15 -- This connector is used for the optional RS-232 control.
Toggle Switch -- Switches the optional upsampling feature on and off.
Operational Switching Modes
Three modes are now supported, three more are planned.
MODE 1 - LOCK
This mode selects the highest priority input that has any kind of SP/DIF stream present. It does not check to see if the stream is valid or
not. It does not care if the stream is Dolby Digital or DTS. It also does not care if there is actually data present. Many sources output
an empty stream when turned on. In this mode the input is selected if anything is present. It is very useful in systems that mix audio and
surround data streams in which sources are turned on and off to control selection.
MODE 1 - VALIDITY SCAN
This mode selects the highest priority input that has a valid stream present. The source sets a validity flag in the data stream and this flag
is read by the Digital Director PRO and used to determine which input is active. Unfortunately not all sources pay attention to this bit
and use it properly. For the most part, CD players will provide a valid bit when the CD is playing and invalid when the CD is paused.
DVD player also act this way for the most part when they are playing a CD. When playing a DVD, they for the most part leave the bit
valid all the time, even if the output has stopped or is surround data.
Hint: Place DVD players at the lowest priority and this problem will be eliminated.
This is the default mode when the unit is powered up. This mode is similar to the original Digital Director with the SCAN upgrade with
one improvement. The old SCAN upgrade did not make a priority selection, just selected the first active input. This mode selects the
active input with the highest priority. This is particularly useful when a DVD player is involved which never releases the line.
MODE 3 - MANUAL
This mode allow direct selection of the input using the up-down buttons. This mode is also selected by pressing the up or down button.
The manual mode provides a connection for inputs that may not be standard SP/DIF such as some multichannel studio formats.
MODE 4 - 6 : For future use.
