The Client
Existing Situation
This MindTree customer is a world leader in
vehicle emissions testing with 80% market share
in the US and Canadian markets. It provides state-
of-the-art inspection equipment, systems and
services to the various Environmental Protection
Agencies (EPA) globally.
The customer provides the complete solution for
the Emission testing system to the motor vehicle
departments of various states in the USA.
Different states have different emission norms and
laws as well as different reporting needs. So our
customer has to modify and enhance the
equipment for each state to meet its needs. The
solution for each state is customized and made
specifically for that state. They have both a single
position solution or a multiple position (typically
3) solution.
There will be multiple testing stations in a state
and each station will have multiple lanes. Each
lane could be a single position or a multiple
The system interfaces with different type of
equipments like Dynamometer, Gas analysers etc.
The System implements the OBD-II (On board
diagnostics protocol for Automobiles) protocol to
interact with the automobiles that implements

each position are networked. All the systems in all
the lanes are connected to a central system called
the station manager which maintains all the details
on test conducted and various other databases.

The interfaces to different types of
equipments
are
typically
using
the
serial
interfaces; some of the equipments may use
different interfaces.
The Station manager implements a database and
that interacts with a larger state system to keep
track of the data and for various report generation.
MindTree has complete ownership for all feature
enhancement,
support
and
continuous
engineering responsibilities for some of the states.
We are working with Customer engineers on
specific development and enhancement for other
states.
Some of the areas where MindTree has total
ownership and responsibility of all feature
enhancement and software maintenance:
1. Emission equipment interfaces with multiple
devices like
OBD-II, Dynamometer, Gas
Analyzers, etc.
2. Detection of the Make/Model of the Vehicle
from the Vehicle Identification number (VIN)
or the number plate
3. Development, enhancement and support for
the OBD-II interface and protocols.
4. Development, enhancement and support for
the complete system including the application
that
ties
all
the
system
together.
The
application
provides
the
sequence
of
operation and also controls the reports,

payments, login/password mechanism etc.
5. Centralized Report generation from the data
collected at the Tech Centers in the various
states.
