The Marine Manual ShiptoShore Transfer
Switches are used to transfer from shore power to
Kohler generator set power.
Twopole transfer switches
can be used with any
generator set having 2wire, 50 Hz. or 60 Hz.,
single phase capability.
Threepole transfer switches
can be used with
any generator set having 3wire or 2wire, 50 Hz.
or 60 Hz., single phase capability.
Fourpole transfer switches
can be used with any
generator set having 4wire or 3wire or 2wire,
50 Hz. or 60 Hz., three phase or single phase
capability.
See chart above for max. voltage and Amps. limits.
WARNING
Hazardous voltage can cause death or severe
injury.
Wherever electricity is present, there is the hazard
of electrocution. Take the same precautions with
electrical appliances in your craft that you would
observe in your home. Open main circuit breaker
on all power sources before servicing equipment.
Make sure unqualified persons, especially
children, cannot gain access to your setkeep the
compartment door locked or securely latched at all
times. Be sure that generator is properly grounded.
Never touch electrical leads or appliances with wet
hands, when standing in water, or on wet ground as
the chance of electrocution is especially prevalent
under such conditions.
2
WARNING
Accidental starting can cause serious personal
injury.
Prevent unit from accidental starting while
servicing.
7.5R/7.5A and 32ROZ/25RFOZ Models
Place
controller MASTER switch to OFF position.
All Models
Disconnect battery, remove negative
() lead first. Reconnect negative () lead last.
WARNING
Hazardous voltage. Electrical backfeed to
utility system can cause electrocution and/or
property damage.
Do not connect to any building/marina electrical
system without connecting through an approved
device and after building main switch is open.
Backfeed connections can cause serious injury or
death to utility personnel working to repair a power
outage and/or personnel in the vicinity.
Unauthorized connection may be unlawful in some
states and/or localities. A shiptoshore transfer
switch must be installed to prevent interconnection
of generator set power and shore power.
INSTALLATION
Before installing switch, check for the name of the
manufacturer. Follow installation instructions
accordingly. L1, L2, L3 represent phase (hot) wire
connections and LO is the neutral wire connection.
All generator leads, except the ground lead, are
normally connected to the transfer switch.
Installation should be done in accordance with
NEC (National Electrical Code) and local
regulations and/or other governing agencies.
WARNING
Gasoline vapors can explode and can cause
serious injury or death.
USCG Regulation 33CFR183 requires all
electrical devices (shiptoshore transfer switch,
remote start panel, etc.) to be ignition protected
when used in a gasolinefueled (gaseous)
environment. These electrical devices do not meet
Regulation 33CFR183 and are not certified to
operate in a gasolinefueled (gaseous)
environment such as engine room or near fuel
tanks. Acceptable locations would be wheelhouse
or other living areas sheltered from rain and water
splash. When operated in a dieselfueled
environment, reference Regulation 33CFR183 for
ignition protection exemptions.
NOTE
Before making electrical connections, be sure the
switch has been properly identified and the
corresponding schematic is known. If there is any
doubt as to which switch is being installed, use an
ohmmeter to verify the switch electrical contacts.
Electro Switch
1. Disassemble face plate assembly. See Figure 1.
2. Drill a 1/2 in. (13 mm) dia. hole in mounting
panel. Use the face plate frame as a template
and drill two holes for mounting screws.
NOTE
Switch will not function if mounting screws
protrude more than 7/16 in. (11 mm) into
switch. Cut screw length according to
installation panel thickness. Maximum
mounting panel thickness is 11/8 in. (29 Nm)
as determined by shaft length.
3
Figure 1. Transfer Switch Connections
NOTE
Styles may vary.
3. Insert switch from back of panel and mount the
face plate frame to front of panel, attach with
screws provided. Remount face plate and
escutcheon plate frame.
4. Attach handle to shaft and tighten with screws.
5. See Figure 2 for electrical connections. Use
rubber grommets and cable ties, as necessary, to
protect and secure wiring from sharp objects,
exhaust system, and any moving parts.
Kraus & Naimer/American Solenoid
(Early Rectangular Design)
1. Remove handle and face plate assembly from
switch. Disassemble face plate. See Figure 1.
2. Drill a 1/2 in. (13 mm) dia. hole in center of
mounting panel. Use the face plate as a
template and drill four 5/32 in. ( 4 mm) dia.
holes for mounting screws.
NOTE
Maximum mounting panel thickness is 3/8 in.
(10 Nm) as determined by shaft length.
3. Insert switch from back of panel. Place face
plate frame on front of panel and attach with
four #10 selftapping screws.
4. Attach face plate and escutcheon plate to frame.
5. Mount handle to shaft and tighten the screw.
6. See Figure 3 for electrical connections. Use
rubber grommets and cable ties, as necessary, to
protect and secure wiring from sharp objects,
exhaust system, and any moving parts.

Kraus & Naimer/American Solenoid
(Newer Round Design)
1. Determine center OFF position of switch.
Remove screw and handle from switch. See
Figure 1.
2. Use a small screwdriver to remove lock ring.
Disassemble face plate and mounting plate.
3. Drill a 1/2 in. (13 mm) dia. hole in center of
mounting panel. Use the face mounting plate as
a template and drill four 5/64 in. (4 mm) dia.
holes for mounting screws.
NOTE
Maximum mounting panel thickness is 3/8 in.
(10 Nm) as determined by shaft length.
4. Insert switch from back of panel. Install switch
with protruding tab on shaft to the bottom.
Place mounting plate on front of panel and
attach with four #10 screws and nuts. Length of
screw to be determined by installation panel
thickness plus 5/8 in. (16 mm).
5. Attach face plate and lock ring to mounting
plate.
6. Mount handle to shaft and tighten screw. Check
that pointer on handle points to each of the three
positions.
7. See Figure 4 (single phase) or Figure 5 (three
phase) for electrical connections. Use rubber
grommets and cable ties, as necessary, to
protect and secure wiring from sharp objects,
exhaust system, and any moving parts.
