Spring show a tribute
to Bing Crosby
The Mainliners spring show, Moments to
Remember, features a tribute to crooner Bing
Crosby who, had he lived, would have been 100
years old this year.
The show opens with a birthday
celebration for Bing (played by John McComb)
and his best buddy Bob Hope (Alan Mennig). This
musical pair reminisces about the past hundred
years as only Bob and Bing could do. Recalling the
familiar Road movies that starred Bing and Bob,
the chorus will sing some of Bings classics.
The show will also feature the international
medalist quartet Uptown Sound and the award-
winning mixed quartet Philharmonix, with Bryn
Mawrs Rick Serpico as its bass singer. In addition,
five chapter quartets will lend their harmonies:

Uptown Sound will
light up the show
This Ohio-based quartet came home with the
second place silver medal at Internationals in 2001,
after winning the bronze medal for third place in
2000. The foursome has been together since 1995
and are all members of the Alliance of Greater
Central Ohio chapter of the Johnny Appleseed
District. The quartet was district champion in 1996.
Its repertoire includes barbershop, gospel,
Sixties Pop, Big Band era and even zany comedy
songs.
Jeff Archer (tenor) began singing
barbershop while attending Bowling Green State
University, as did two others in the quartet. He has
sung with many JAD quartets including the Varsity
Lettermen and GQ. Jeff is a real estate investor and
works with Financial Savers Association Inc. as a
mortgage planner in Akron.
David Calland (lead) is the director of the

Alliance chorus. Dave, like Jeff, attended Bowling
Green. His quartet experience includes singing with
Which Wayz Up and with a 1995 international
quarterfinalist quartet, Ace in the Hole. He works as
a computer systems consultant with Franklin
Computer Services Group in Columbus.
Steve Kovach (baritone) says his nickname
Phil describes his baritone duty to fill the chords.
He has sung with Which Wayz Up and The Ring
Leaders and is a section leader of the Alliance.
Steve works as an appraiser for Medina County,
Ohio.
Steve Denino (bass) started singing
barbershop harmony with his father and two
brothers in Deninos Home Grown Harmony when
he was 12. He has also sung with the 1989 JAD
quartet champions Bowery Boys and with Ace in the
Hole (with Dave). Steve attended Ohio State and is
a bass section leader with the chorus. Like Calland,
he works as a computer systems consultant with the
Franklin Computer Services Group in Columbus.
George Ehrgott, a new
face on the risers
New member George Ehrgotts interest in
barbershopping began when he heard a quartet sing
to the patients at Bryn Mawr Rehabilitation Center
one day in Goshen. He and a friend were visiting
the friends wife at the rehab. Enthused by what he
heard, his friend immediately joined the West
Chester Chordbusters. That was enough for George.
He joined too.
Hes no stranger to singing. In addition to
singing more than five years with the Chordbusters
until that chapter recently disbanded, he has also
sung with the Exton Chorale and at his church. At
one point he played guitar and sang at several of the
church services.
A 1957 graduate of Manhattan College in
electrical engineering, he worked for many years for
General Electric, mostly at its huge Valley Forge
office complex in King of Prussia (now occupied by
Lockheed Martin). Arriving in the area in 1961, he
specialized in the design and launching of satellites
such as weather, navigational and GPS satellites. He
retired from GE in 1998.
His wife Judy retired from a teaching
position with the Chester County Intermediate Unit,
also in 1998. She was a reading specialist. The
Ehrgotts have four grown children --- George Jr.,
