D
es Plaines Hobbies, 1468 Lee St.,
Des Plaines, Illinois 60018 has re-
leased ready to run 36-foot-long plas-
tic single-dome tank cars which are
made in China.
The cars are fully detailed, come in
many roadnames, and come with either
hi-rail or scale wheels. The paint and let-
tering on each is well-done and very crisp.
True scale versions of the typical
short tank cars of the 1930s through
the 1950s period have not been made
in ready-to-run form. Weve had many
kits, but nothing RTR until now.
Our samples included the United
States Army Transportation Corps.

ing, and the bright silver Roma Wine
tank car with red lettering and black
shadow lettering.
S SCALE AMERICA 36-FOOT SINGLE DOME TANK CARS
The cars feature rivet detail on the top
spine of the tank, around the dome, on
the dome itself, and where the ends are
riveted to the tank body. The rivets alone
add a lot of interest to the car (the old AF
tank cars did not show rivet detail on the
top of the tank).
The cars feature a dome hatch, wire
handrails around the car, platform beneath
the dome, dome
grabirons, ladders
each side extend-
ing from the frame
to the platform,
vertical end brake-
wheel, end and
side identification
boards, frame nut-
bolt-washer detail,
side stirrup steps,
S Helper Service
, 77 Cliffwood Ave.,
Cliffwood, NJ 07721 will soon have 70-
ton ore cars available in numerous
roadnames. The cars are modeled after
the Duluth, Missabe & Iron Range U-27
Lake Superior design of 1949 (car se-
ries 29500-30499) by the Pressed Steel
Car Co. The cars were still in service on
the DM&IR as of 2000, and many of the
cars were sold to other roads for use in
MofW service.
The cars are similar to thousands that
were built to move iron ore in Minnesota
and Ontario, Canada. The 24-foot-long
cars could accommodate the ore docks at
Two Harbors, Superior Ashland/Duluth,
Escanaba, Marquette and Thunder Bay.
The cars will feature opening hopper bay
doors, handgrabs of formed music wire,
Zamac center sill and bolster and diecast
metal sprung trucks. Roadnames will in-
clude DM&IR, B&LE, BN, CN, CP, GN,
Milwaukee Rd., SP and UP. Cars, retail-
ing at $39.95, will also be available un-
decorated and will be suitable for either

tank bands, plastic frames with a molded
plastic AB brake system, a space for the
coupler pockets each end, non-sprung
trucks, and crisp painting and lettering.
The cars roll freely, and each is avail-
able in two roadnames. Price is $39.95.
These cars are a much-needed item
in S scale, and will help complete many
a modelers rolling stock roster.
