Fix I-5 Project Update
July 14, 2008
Caltrans, prime contractor C.C. Myers, Inc. announced today that due to the
extreme heat, the opening of the southbound lanes of Interstate 5 in
Sacramento has been delayed until Thursday at 1 p.m. Stage 4 of the project
will now begin Friday, July 18 at 8 p.m. All lanes of northbound I-5 between the
U.S. Highway 50/Capitol City Freeway interchange will remain closed until
Monday, July 28 at 5 a.m. Below is a summary of yesterday's activities and a
look ahead at today's schedule.
Last night, crews began pouring polyester concrete in the fourth and final
lane of mainline I-5 in the Boat Section between L and S Streets. Tonight,
they expect to begin pouring on the shoulders and transition ramps at the
U.S. Highway 50/Capitol City freeway interchange.
Local residents, pedestrians and drivers are again reminded they may
detect a strong odor as they walk, ride or drive near the work area while
the epoxy-like primer and polyester concrete is being placed.
On the north side of the project, crews continued work to strengthen slabs
south of Richards Blvd. Thick steel dowel rods are being placed in the
wheel tracks to connect the slabs replaced during Stage 2 of the project.
This work will continue tonight.
Crews also continued overnight work to profile the new pavement and
replacement slabs on northbound I-5. Drivers should notice the
smoother pavement in both the Boat Section and over the slabs replaced
during Stage 1 of the project.
Sign panel replacement also continued. New sign panels have been
placed at both J and Q Streets and today, more signs will replaced at the I
and J Street on-ramps. These signs haven't been replaced since this
section of roadway was constructed in the late 1960's. The new signs
have improved lighting and include exit numbers.
The Traffic Management Team reports another trouble-free day on I-
80 through the detour and on southbound I-5 approaching the work area.
The engineering staff reports they reviewed several alternatives in an effort to remain on
schedule. Ultimately, they decided it was in the best interest of the traveling public and
the project to delay the opening. The new work schedule will be posted on the project
website.
