SPD Dry Ice Limits Increased

to
regulation as dangerous goods has been increased from 2.0 kilos/4.4 pounds to 2.3 kilos/5.0 pounds.
This increase applies to SPDs transported on mainline United Airlines and UAX partner Trans States
(AX) flights only.

Quantities of dry ice 2.3 kilos/5 pounds or less can be accepted as non-dangerous goods in SPD
shipments provided the commodity being cooled is not dangerous goods. No dangerous goods (DG)
paperwork is required for these shipments.

This quantity exception applies only to dry ice accepted as SPD. If the shipment containing dry ice is
tendered on a freight (non-SPD) AWB, normal dangerous goods acceptance procedures are required
regardless of the quantity of dry ice being tendered.

UAX carriers (except for AX) are not increasing the quantity of dry ice they will accept in SPD shipments.
If the SPD routing involves transport via a UAX carrier, up to 2.0 kilos/4.4 pounds of dry ice is accepted
as SPD.

Shipments bearing a Class 9 DG label must be accepted and transported as dangerous goods. If the
quantity of dry ice is below the excepted limits and the commodity is not DG, the shipper should remove
the Class 9 label and the rules for excepted quantities of dry ice will apply. If the shipper does not
remove the Class 9 label, the normal paperwork requirements for Class 9 DG apply and the shipment
must travel as DG.

The chart below displays United Airlines and United Express carriers policies governing the acceptance
of dry ice as SPD. Please note that up to 99 pounds of dry ice can be accepted as SPD. However,
quantities of dry ice greater than 5.0 pounds are regulated as dangerous goods and must be tendered at
a United Freight Facility. The exception to this rule is that up to 50 pounds of dry ice can be accepted at
Uniteds SPD Centers in Los Angeles (LAX), Chicago (ORD) and San Francisco (SFO) if the commodity
being cooled is an exempt specimen shipment.
