As the kickoff to
the 50
th
Anniversary of
Future Business Leaders
of America of premier
leadership and business
alike, the Colorado Fall
Leadership Conferences
were just beyond perfect.
Taking place at four loca-
tions this year, with the
help of the TRI Leader-
ship, the CFLC had taken
Leadership in Action to a
whole different level.
Members participated in
exciting and tough work-
shops from the TRI that
covered the importance of
leadership applied to busi-
ness throughout our lives.
The workshops were inte-
grated with rewarding as-
pects and electrifying
ideas intended to start
this year with promising
results and peerless inspi-
ration for a great and sur-
prising year for our chap-
ters. This year, the CFLC
raised almost $2000 for
the March of Dimes!!! With
an unnerving attitude,
FBLA is in great standing
as we embark on our jour-
ney to Vail. Thanks to your
FBLA State Adviser, Deb-
bie Ramirez, the State
Officer Team, TRI Leader-
ship, and many other lead-
ers, the CFLC this year
was very successful. Good
Luck to all competitors
and remember your jour-
ney has just begun!

Fall
FBLA Conference in Ster-
ling had the pleasurable
opportunity to listen to
Representative Jerry Son-
nenberg speak at the
opening session. He
started the conference out
in a lighthearted way by
explaining the true mean-
ing of politics. He empha-
sized the break down of
the word into poly and
tics, poly meaning many,
and tics meaning blood-
sucking pests. He contin-
ued his talk pointing out
the opportunities that lay
ahead for every student
and that taking advantage
of these opportunities is
the key to being success-
ful. Representative Son-
nenberg emphasized the
key points of leadership
and explained the neces-
sity to be able to lead a
group of people in any
career option. His out-
standing speech con-
cluded with encourage-
ment and appreciation to
all FBLA members for tak-
ing the initiative of being a
leader.

Laurie
Urich,
state program director for
Business and Marketing
Education, was named
Colorado Business Educa-
tor of the Year by the Colo-
rado Business Educators
(CBE) organization.
The award recog-
nizes individual business
educators who have made
contributions to the pro-
fession through out-
standing classroom per-
formance, improvement of
the total school climate,
advising student organiza-
tions, service to business
education at the state
level and membership in
and contributions to CBE
and other career and tech-
nical education organiza-
tions.
Prior to joining
CCCS, Urich was taught at
Monarch High School for
seven years. She has
been exceptionally active
in Future Business Lead-
ers of America, serving in
state and national posi-
tions. During her tenure at
Monarch, she had five
state FBLA officers, the
largest FBLA chapter in
District 2, numerous state
and national qualifiers,
and the second largest
professional membership
in Mountain Plains Region.
She has been named
Colorado FBLA Adviser of
the Year and CBE Teacher
of the Year. The Sargent
High School FBLA chapter
presented her an Honor-
ary Life Member of FBLA-
PBL. Urich is a member of
CBE, CMEA, DECA,
MPBEA, NBEA, CACTE and
ACTE.
At
Monarch,
Urichs students partici-
pated in the Internet
Safety Foundation Colo-
rado I-Crew, the first group
of this kind in the country
to educate the community,
students and parents
about the dangers of us-
ing the Internet. Her for-
mer students now work
and speak nationally to
help other states through
FBLA and other organiza-
tions promote the need of
internet safety awareness.
She and the Colorado I-
Crew met with US Attor-
ney General Roberto Gon-
zales last April at a na-
tional press conference in
Denver. The Colorado I-
Crew Urich continues to
serve on the Board of Di-
rectors for the Internet
Safety Foundation.
I have always believed
that students learn best
by doing, Urich explained.
My goal was to make
each day fun, challenging
and rewarding as they
would be working on as-
signments, or communi-
cating with business peo-
ple and peers. I wanted
their learning environment
to replicate a real world
business experience that
would prepare them for
their future. I wouldnt
have received this award
without the support of my
school, community and
most importantly my stu-
dents.
My goal was to make each day fun,
challenging and rewarding

Emilio Lone Elk, a senior
at Prairie High School in
New Raymer with a 4.0
grade point average and
quarterback of the high
schools six-man football
team, has been recog-
nized by The Denver Post
as an outstanding stu-
dent. The Denver Post
recently termed his FLBA
accomplishments as
more decorated than his
sports accomplishments.
One of the few remaining

Are you ready to
take the next step in
FBLA? District offices are
an important element in
the success of FBLA and
an excellent way for you to
share your leadership
abilities. District officers
work closely with State
Vice Presidents in prepar-
ing for the District Confer-
ence and other district
functions.
Running for a
district office is simple
and a great experience.
You must build your re-
sume and create a cover
letter. Each candidate is
expected to have an inter-
view with the State Vice
President and any other
interviewers chosen for
their expertise in the or-
ganization. Running for
the office will provide you
with the experience of
interviewing and building
the necessary materials
for an interview.
If you are se-
lected as a district officer,
you will be able to work
closely beside the State
Vice President the follow-
ing year. Each State Vice
President is responsible
for running the District
Judging Conference and
can delegate many tasks
t
