PocketJet3 / 3Plus Bluetooth Installation, Bluetake USB Adapter
indows based computer. The
BlueSoleil software should be installed according to the instructions and CD provided with the adapter. Once that
is accomplished, use the following as your guide to connecting your PocketJet3 printer via Bluetooth.
Discovery
The first task is Bluetooth Device Discovery. This will identify all of the Bluetooth devices that are powered on and
discoverable in the nearby area. Be sure that your PocketJet3 printer is connected to power and powered up
before continuing.
From the "My Bluetooth" dropdown, select "Bluetooth Device Discovery"
The BlueSoleil software will find any such devices, including your PocketJet3 printer. Your printer may appear
either as "PENTAX PocketJet" or "Pentax PJ3BT".
Verify Service
Double click the printer icon, and it will be highlighted in yellow, as will the "Serial Port Profile" icon in the list of
Bluetooth services. This indicates that BlueSoleil has successfully identified the printer as a device that will require
use of the "Serial Port Profile".
Pair First?
Right click on the printer icon. This will bring up several options.
If you wish or require a secured connection to the printer, select "Pair Device" and use the instructions for pairing
that follow.
If you do not require this feature, skip to the "Connect" instructions that appear after these "Pair Device"
instructions.
Set PIN Password (Passkey)
BlueSoleil can be set with a default password for pairing purposes. From the "My Bluetooth" pulldown, select the
"Security" option.
BlueSoleil will ask what level of security you wish to employ. Select "Medium", click on the "Set Default Passkey"
box, and type in the default PIN code for the printer which is "default" (lower case). Click "Apply" and "OK".
Note the small red checkmark that now appears next to your PocketJet3 printer icon. This indicates that a
successful "pairing" has occurred.
You may now continue on to the "Connect" phase of the procedure.
Connect to the Printer
Right click on the printer icon. This will bring up several options.
. selecting the only available option, "Bluetooth Serial Port Service".
Having done this, BlueSoleil will report a COMx serial port number to you. Note this number, as it will be needed
later when installing the printer driver. Click the "Yes" box so that this Bluetooth serial connection will be used
automatically when you wish to print from your Windows applications.
Check Signal Status
If you wish, you can monitor your signal strength using the BlueSoleil software. Right click on the printer icon, and
from the options shown, select "Status".
BlueSoleil will report the Com port number, bytes transferred, and of particular interest here, the relative signal
strength between the Bluetake adapter and your printer.
Since both the Bluetake adapter and your printer are "Class I" devices, they will negotiate power levels between
them, and will try to keep the power level moderated such that your "Radio Signal Strength" indicator remains
centered as shown below. If the signal strength drops below the center of the indicator, you will still be able to print,
but this indicates that the devices are at full power and not able to maintain an optimum radio connection.
As the signal strength drops down towards the "Weak" end of the indicator either due to the orientation of the
printer and USB adapter, or due to an increased distance between them, printing will slow as the data rate is
reduced or data is resent due to errors.
