SCHOOL BUS/PASSENGER VEHICLE RULES
Philosophy: Transportation is provided to students as a privilege and convenience. It is therefore
subject to revocation by Storey County School District at any time. It is provided to
students as determined by NRS 392.140 Bus Riding Privileges.
Parent/Guardian: Please review the rules shown below with your student and return the attached
information form to their teacher. These rules and regulations apply to all regular routes, field trips and
sporting activities. The school bus drivers responsibility is the safe transportation of the students in their
care. Your student can help in ensuring a safe trip by following these School Bus/Passenger Vehicle
Rules:
1.
Students are to arrive five (5) minutes before their scheduled time, board and exit the bus in a
safe and orderly manner (no shoving and pushing). If a student is to cross a street, they are to
await instructions from the driver.
2.
Students transported in a school bus/passenger vehicle shall be under the authority of and be
responsible directly to the School Bus/Passenger Vehicle Driver.
3.
The vehicles which are used to transport students are considered an extension of the
classroom, and as such, students are subject to all school rules and policies. The same pupil
conduct is expected as in the classroom.
4.
Students are to remain seated, facing forward and keep their hands and feet to themselves at all
times.
5.
No loud, defamatory or profane language is to be used at any time.
6.
Deviations in bus stops are not allowed (i.e., students changing stops), the only exception to this
rule will be if a student provides a note from their parent/guardian or a school administrator. This
note must be given to the bus driver as the student boards the vehicle.
7.
The following items are not allowable on any school bus: drugs, alcohol, weapons, skateboards,
any skates, live animals, any tobacco products, matches, lighters, wearing athletic footwear with
spikes or cleats, eating or drinking, any item large enough to block aisles or seats (large book
bags, musical instruments, large projects, etc.).
8.
No boisterous conduct. Fighting will result in an automatic two (2) week suspension of bus
riding privileges for all parties involved.
9.
Nothing is to be thrown at, in, on, or out of the bus windows of the vehicle at any time.
10.
At no time, are hands or arms to be extended out of the windows of the bus/vehicle.
11.
Emergency exits, hatches and windows are not to be used as regular exits. These are for
emergency situations only. Students found using these exits, not in an emergency situation, will
have their bus riding privileges automatically suspended for two (2) weeks.
12.
The district may utilize a video monitoring system. All students/passengers are subject to being
videotaped on the school bus to monitor student behavior.

DISCIPLINARY GUIDELINES
The Transportation Department realizes that the majority of the students adhere to and practice self
discipline. However, on occasion, some students behavior must be modified to ensure the safety and
comfort of themselves and their fellow passengers. In these instances the following procedure will be
utilized:
A) If a student's action warrants a written notice, an attempt will be made to notify the parent/guardian
before each written notice is given to the student. This is to insure the parent/guardian are aware of
the action and can help in the discipline process.
If written notice is given to a student, that student will not be allowed to ride the bus until the written
notice is signed by the parent/guardian and returned to the bus driver that issued the written notice.
If written notice is not returned within three (3) days by the student, the written notice will be mailed
to the parent/guardian by certified mail with a signature required.
B) The first written notice will be a warning, the second written notice will suspend riding privileges on
the vehicle for five (5) days and a third written notice will warrant loss of riding privileges indefinitely.
C) Questions regarding discipline can be discussed with the Transportation Office by telephoning (775)
847-0942.
