INTRODUCTION

SONOTRONICS is a leader in the manufacture of ultrasonic tracking
transmitters and receiving equipment, and from its start in 1971,
SONOTRONICS products have earned an excellent reputation world wide
for quality and performance.

The HPR-95 is an audio amplifier designed for use with piezo-electric
hydrophones, allowing for listening and recording of underwater sounds
from water animals or underwater pumps and submerged equipment.

OPERATION

Generally, the HPR-95 is operated with an omni-directional hydrophone
such as the DH-3. Carefully remove the protective cover from the DH-3,
exposing the shiny black surface of the transducer element - this element is
fragile and will break if dropped onto a hard surface, be sure to replace the
protective cover when not in use. Connect the BNC connector of the
hydrophone into the HPR-95, and plug in the headphones into the jack
labeled EAR. Turn the control knob ON and slowly rotate the indicator
to the 9 oclock position while cautiously rubbing a finger over the surface
of the element - a scratching sound should be heard in the headphones. The
hydrophone may be lowered into the water by holding onto the coax cable,
however if it is desired to use the hydrophone while moving through the
water, a tow rope must be used and attached to the plastic housing to limit
the stress placed on the coax cable.

While listening for sounds in the headphone, a recorder may be attached to
the TAPE jack allowing simultaneous monitoring and taping. Note that
while rotating the control knob affects the volume in the headphone, it has
no affect on the output level at the TAPE jack.
CONNECTIONS
Hydrophone


The BNC connector is the hydrophone input: signals received from the
hydrophone may be as small as 1 millivolt, consequently care of the coax
cable between the hydrophone and the HPR-95 is extremely important.
Use extreme care when unwinding and winding the hydrophone coaxial
cable. Your successful use of the hydrophone is dependent upon a
coaxial cable in perfect condition. In the salt water environment, the
smallest cut or pin hole in the coax will lead to water intrusion and
failure of the unit.
The hydrophone should be laid down and the cable played out hand over
hand rather than just pulling the coils off of the end. The hand over hand
method eliminates kinks in the cable than can lead to it's failure. The
reverse procedure should be followed when re-winding the cable.

Generally, the HPR-95 is shipped with the DH-3 Omni-directional hydrophone, and
is designed to receive sounds equally well in all directions. Note that a protective
shroud of PVC covers the transducer, and should be removed prior to lowering into
the water, and replaced when not in use: the transducer is fragile and will break if
dropped onto a hard surface if not protected. In addition, the handle of the DH-3
may be extended by threading the coax through a length of 0.5 schedule 40 PVC,
and attaching to the coupler at base of the hydrophone.
Headphone

The headphone jack, labeled EAR, is a standard "mini" audio jack, and may
be used with both monaural and stereo headphones. Note that the volume
control knob on the front panel is used to control the sound level to the
headphone only, and has no other affect on the rest of the receiving system.
Use care to avoid unnecessarily loud volume setting: during normal
operation the volume control should not be set past the 12 o'clock
position. Tape
Another mini jack, labeled TAPE, is provided to for connecting to a tape
recorder or to an external amplified speaker. This output is monaural and
has a fixed gain, independent of the control knob.

Power

Power is supplied by an internal 9VDC alkaline type transistor radio
battery, and will typically operate for greater than 36 hours of continuous
use: it is good field practice to carry an extra battery just in case!

Battery replacement is performed by removing the 4 screws on the top of
the case, then remove the nut around the BNC connector (where the
hydrophone connects), and carefully opening the top of the case. Replace
by attaching another alkaline battery to the connector, observing the correct
polarity, until the new battery is seated into the terminals, then reassemble
in the reverse order of disassembly. Check for proper operation by
attaching the hydrophone and headphone, and listening at low volumes for
ambient noise.
